On: Saturday, 07 Dec 2019
Venue: Away

On a chilly Saturday morning, Manchester Grammar travelled over to St Bedes to play after a tight game that finished 6-4 earlier on in the season. St Bedes were hoping to avenge their previous disappointing result.

The game started off slow, with both teams finding their feet, looking to get a foothold in the game. St Bedes were looking to get in behind with their fast right winger, but he was unable to make a significant impact . After a free kick that was given away midway through the opposition’s half, the ball was swung in towards the back post. St Bedes failed to deal with it, and Shaan swept in a neat finish with his left foot into the bottom corner.

St Bedes kept knocking on the door, but the back four of MGS stayed strong and nullified the attacks, keeping a clean sheet going into the second half.

After a ball that was lifted into Dan’s path, he took it first time on the volley, catching it sweetly and directing it into s the bottom corner. As good as the finish was, the referee deemed Dan to be offside. MGS carried on pushing for a second.

A second set piece nearly gave MGS another opportunity. As the corner was whipped into the box, a number of blue shirts attacked the ball, including Shaan looking for his second. The ball was directed towards goal by both Dan and Shaan, but was eventually cleared away.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, the St Bedes right-winger who had been kept so quiet by the MGS defenders, chased a loose ball that had been a miscommunication between keeper and defender, and the ball found its way into the MGS net. 1-1.

Later on, after a strong header away by Jaydan, the ball worked its way down to the fresh legs of Abilash, whose cross was interfered with by the outstretched hand of a St Bedes defender. Penalty!

Jaydan stepped up to take the penalty. The keeper guessed correctly and saved but on the rebound no one reacted quicker than James, who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. MGS regained the lead.

As St Bedes were looking for their second equaliser, one of their forwards got in behind, which forced a good save from Will at his near post.

Manchester Grammar managed to hold onto their deserved lead, with Rahul coming on to solidify the midfield in the closing stages. A hard fought win.
