Match Report
The Manchester Grammar School 2nd XV vs  Bolton School Boys Division
On: Saturday, 28 Sep 2019
Venue: at Home

Given the horrible conditions and fierce wind we were playing into, our targets for this match were to retain possession and concentrate on getting the basics right. The lads' spirits were up as they were being coached by Mr Taylor instead of Mr Morris, with the word, "Talisman" being bandied about. However it didn't bode well when we carried the ball upright into contact immediately from the kick off, spilling the ball and giving Bolton good possession deep in our own half. Fortunately some disciplined and patient defending and a Bolton knock-on saw Rafey Baig get the ball in space and beat two men to score our first, with George Berry adding the extra two by drop kicking, as we had somehow lost our kicking tee. With another failure to deal with the kick-off, we had to defend again for a spell, until Ollie Johnson was able to crash over under the sticks for another easy two for Berry. A Bolton infringement at kick-off led to a free kick and Jamie Primrose holding the ball with no clue what to do with it. Fortunately some good phase play saw Will Rochford able to dart around the side of a ruck and get our third. George Berry quickly scored our fourth, and then to everybody's amazement Myles Monaghan got the ball on the wing 30 metres out, bounced off the winger and full back and managed to score in the corner. I am reliably informed that by Saturday afternoon he was claiming to have run the length of the pitch. Some sustained pressure and sloppy defending saw Bolton cross for their first on the stroke of half-time: 31-5. We decided to play with just 13 men in the second half, to make us work harder and have a better contest. Nevertheless Campbell, Lee and Arrowsmith were all able to cross the line, with Lee's try being a superb solo effort directly from a long kick off. Bolton got a late and well deserved consolation try to end the game. MoM: Whole team.
