Match Report
The Manchester Grammar School 1st XV vs  Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby
On: Saturday, 21 Sep 2019
Venue: Away

Merchant Taylor’s away from home is always a difficult proposition. Their U6 side has always had the upper hand throughout their school careers so a tough game was always on the cards.

Both teams started brightly. Merchants had plenty of first phase possession but MGS were defending well and managed a few early turnovers at the break down. MGS scored the first try of the game and it was Ollie Hill strolling in for his trademark score. Seb Murphy managed a second from close range in the second half after excellent work from the forwards and with Ben Simpson converting MGS opened a 12 point lead.

Merchants struck soon afterwards, with the wind at their backs they kicked deep, chased well and forced a penalty. A quick tap resulted in a smart converted try to get the hosts back in to the game, 12-7. Ben Simpson kicked a penalty with 5 minutes to go to mean Merchants needed two scores and although we dominated and managed the game well it was slightly disappointing to conceded from the last play as Merchants exploited a blind side overlap.

A really strong solid defensive display earnt this victory. We could have and maybe should have scored another couple of tries but a few mistakes and good defence from Merchants kept us out. Lots to work on but an excellent victory.
