Match Report
The Manchester Grammar School 1st XI vs  Altrincham Grammar School for Boys
On: Saturday, 07 Sep 2019
Venue: Away

The MGS First XI travelled to Altrincham Grammar for a competitive first match of the new season. We started positively, with wide players in Smyth and Chapman putting in a shift against physical opponents. The opposition asked a lot of questions early on but our defence coped strongly with good interceptions from Roberts and Bundred in particular. Archer made it 1-0 after sending their keeper the wrong way with a well placed penalty that he also won. We controlled the game from then on, and went into halftime in the ascendency. In the second half, another great run from the wing by Archer created an easy finish for Meir to double our lead. Shortly after, an in swinging corner from Davies went directly in, after some questionable defending by the opposing goalkeeper. At 3-0, Alty began to press higher up, and MGS played several players out of position, including Bundred in the centre, Meir at RB and Livingston at CB however we coped well with the pressure. Duschenes was quick off his line to collect over hit balls played through, and made a good punch to clear from an Alty corner. However, Altrincham scored their consolation goal after the ball fell to their midfielder on the edge of the box and took a shot into the far corner to make it 3-1. With only a few minutes left, we were able to see the game out, with Bundred, Ball and Wiggetts trying to add to our lead, some coming closer than others. Overall, it was a good start to the season with a positive team display against a physically strong Altrincham side, as we now look forward to our Wednesday friendly match against Maleth Albion.
