Match Report
The Manchester Grammar School 1st XV vs  Altrincham Grammar School for Boys
On: Saturday, 17 Nov 2018
Venue: at Home

After three narrow defeats, it was great to get back to winning ways in a local derby.

AGSB came out of the blocks quickly and raced into a 12-0 lead. Some determined and elusive running was enough to shrug off some weak MGS tackling and those watching on the sideline feared the worst.

Fortunately, this was a day when we showed some grit, dragging ourselves back into the game with three first half tries of our own. A set move from a scrum led to some great interplay between Ollie Hill and Alfie Meir for the first, a well-executed catch and drive brought our second, touched down by Dan Adams, and there was no stopping Joe White for our third, which gave us a 19-12 lead.

We managed the game well in general in the second half, but still found a way to turn a promising attacking position for us into a try for AGSB to make the score 19-17. We heeded this warning, closing out the game with sensible rugby from the team. Our control of possession and territory led to the award of a very kickable penalty, converted with the minimum of fuss by Sam Frank, and a series of strong drives down the middle of the field led to a converted try for Zak Ball to give us a bit of breathing space just before the end of the game.

A poor start and a few individual errors aside, this was one of the most structured, disciplined and professional performances of the season against a competitive AGSB team. The wheels could easily have fallen off, but there was something a little different about the mood in the squad after last week's excellent performance (and agonising defeat) against Wirral GS. The boys pulled together really well in the face of adversity and mounted a great comeback to win the match, and our game management this week was very impressive. All of this reflects very well on the captain, and for this reason (in addition to another fine individual performance) Tom Pye gets the nod for MoM this week.
